Tour Overview

The Mountain Springs Tour takes you into the heart of Dhofar's most magical landscape — the lush mountain plateau where crystal-clear springs bubble from the earth, feeding verdant gardens and creating an oasis that seems almost impossible in the Arabian Peninsula.

This tour reveals a completely different side of Salalah that most visitors never see. While the coast offers dramatic cliffs and beaches, the mountains hold their own secret world: terraced gardens cascading down hillsides, natural pools perfect for swimming, and ancient sacred sites that have drawn pilgrims for centuries. During the Khareef season (June-September), this region transforms into a vision of emerald green, with waterfalls, misty valleys, and a cool, refreshing atmosphere that feels like stepping into another climate zone entirely.

Ahmed's deep connection to these mountains means you'll visit not just the well-known springs, but hidden gems that only locals know about. He'll share stories of the region's spiritual significance, explain the unique geology that creates these perennial water sources, and ensure you experience the springs at their most beautiful. Whether you're seeking spiritual connection, natural beauty, or simply a refreshing escape from the heat, this tour delivers an unforgettable day in Dhofar's highlands.

Detailed Itinerary

1

Ayn Razat

Your mountain journey begins at Ayn Razat, perhaps the most picturesque of all Dhofar's springs. This natural spring feeds a series of terraced gardens that cascade down the hillside in layers of vivid green, creating a scene that's been compared to rice terraces in Southeast Asia. Crystal-clear water flows through stone channels, nourishing banana trees, palms, and colorful flowering plants. There's a paved walking path that allows you to explore the terraces, and several spots perfect for photos. During Khareef, the entire hillside becomes a waterfall as water overflows from each terrace to the next. The spring itself emerges from a rocky outcrop, and you can see exactly where the pure mountain water bubbles up from the earth. Ahmed will explain the traditional falaj irrigation system that distributes the water and the importance of these springs to local agriculture and community life.

40-50 min Photo stop
2

Ayn Sahlnoot

A short drive through mountain roads brings you to Ayn Sahlnoot, a serene spring that offers a more intimate, peaceful experience compared to the more popular Ayn Razat. This spring emerges at the base of a rocky cliff, creating a natural pool surrounded by lush vegetation including ancient fig trees and wild jasmine. The atmosphere here is almost mystical — the sound of water, the shade of overhanging trees, and the cool mountain air create a natural meditation space. Local families have been coming here for generations to enjoy the fresh water and shaded picnic spots. There's a small pathway that follows the water downstream, and you might spot dragonflies, butterflies, and if you're lucky, the rare Dhofar toad that inhabits these spring areas. Ahmed often brings guests here specifically because it remains uncrowded even during peak Khareef season, allowing you to experience the springs as they were meant to be enjoyed — in peaceful contemplation of nature's abundance.

30-40 min Nature walk
3

Ayn Jarzee

Ayn Jarzee is the swimming highlight of the Mountain Springs tour. This spring creates a natural pool that's large enough for a proper swim, with water so clear you can see the bottom even at its deepest points. The pool is surrounded by rocky outcrops that provide natural seating areas and diving platforms for the more adventurous. The water temperature is refreshingly cool year-round — a welcome relief from the coastal heat. During Khareef, the pool can overflow and create small waterfalls over the rocks. There are basic changing facilities nearby, and Ahmed will ensure you have privacy to change if needed. Even if you don't swim, watching the crystal-clear water and the play of light on the rocky pool bottom is mesmerizing. Many guests say this is the most refreshing swim of their entire Oman trip. The surrounding area is also excellent for bird watching, with several species that are unique to the Dhofar mountains.

45-60 min Swimming possible
4

Ittin Mountain

As you continue ascending, you'll reach Ittin Mountain — a dramatic escarpment that rises sharply from the coastal plain to over 1,000 meters elevation. The drive up offers increasingly spectacular views, and at the summit plateau, you're rewarded with a panoramic vista that stretches from the city of Salalah to the Arabian Sea on one side, and across the mountain plateau to the desert beyond on the other. The temperature here can be 10-15°C cooler than the coast, making it a welcome escape during summer months. The plateau is covered in vegetation unique to this elevation, including wild figs, acacia trees, and during Khareef, fields of wildflowers. There's a viewpoint area with safety railings where you can take in the full panorama. On clear days, you can see for 50 kilometers or more. This is also an excellent spot to understand the unique microclimate of Dhofar — how the monsoon winds hit the mountains and drop their moisture, creating the green oasis that makes this region so special.

30-40 min Viewpoint

Nabi Ayoub Tomb

Perched on the mountain plateau is the Tomb of Nabi Ayoub (Prophet Job), one of the most significant religious sites in Dhofar. This small but beautiful mosque and tomb complex is revered by Muslims, Christians, and Jews alike, as Job is a prophet shared across the Abrahamic faiths. According to local tradition, Job spent time in this region during his trials, and the site has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. The mosque features distinctive Dhofari architecture with its rounded dome and white walls, set against the backdrop of the mountain plateau. Inside, the tomb is marked by a simple but beautifully decorated enclosure. Visitors of all faiths are welcome, though modest dress is required and shoes must be removed. Ahmed will share the story of Job's patience and faith, and explain the site's importance to both local Muslims and international pilgrims. The peaceful atmosphere and panoramic views from the grounds make this a deeply moving stop, regardless of your personal beliefs. There's a small area where you can sit and reflect, and many visitors describe feeling a profound sense of calm here.

30-40 min Sacred site

Ayoon Water Springs

The final spring stop brings you to the Ayoon Springs — a cluster of multiple natural springs that emerge from the mountainside in a scenic valley. "Ayoon" means "eyes" in Arabic, and you'll understand why when you see the multiple spring sources that appear like eyes weeping crystal tears from the rock face. The water from these springs collects in a series of natural pools connected by small waterfalls, creating a fairy-tale landscape. There are walking paths that allow you to explore different spring sources, and several spots perfect for sitting and enjoying the surroundings. During Khareef, the entire valley becomes a cascade of water as all the springs overflow simultaneously. This is also an excellent spot for photography, with the contrast of white limestone rocks, emerald water, and green vegetation creating naturally beautiful compositions. Ahmed knows the less-visited spring sources here and will take you off the main path to discover hidden pools that most tourists never see.

40-50 min Multiple springs

Lunch at Local Restaurant

After your morning of exploration, you'll enjoy lunch at a mountain restaurant that offers authentic Dhofari cuisine with views of the surrounding landscape. This is a chance to taste dishes that are unique to the region — perhaps shuwa (slow-cooked meat wrapped in banana leaves), fresh mountain honey with local bread, or grilled meats with traditional spices. The cooler mountain air makes outdoor dining particularly pleasant, and the restaurant's location offers a peaceful setting far from the bustle of the city. Ahmed will help you navigate the menu and can explain the ingredients and preparation methods of each dish. Water and soft drinks are included, and vegetarian options are available if requested in advance.

45-60 min Traditional Dhofari

Return to Hotel

Enjoy the scenic descent from the mountains back to your hotel in Salalah, arriving with a refreshed spirit and unforgettable memories of Dhofar's hidden highland paradise. The return journey typically takes 30-45 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! Swimming is possible at Ayn Jarzee and some of the Ayoon springs, especially during Khareef season (June-September) when water levels are higher. The water is refreshingly cool year-round, typically around 18-22°C (64-72°F). Bring your swimwear and a towel if you'd like to take a dip. The natural pools have rocky edges, so water shoes can be helpful but aren't essential. Ahmed will advise you on the best swimming spots on the day based on current conditions. Note that swimming may not be possible at all springs during the dry season (October-May) when water levels are lower, but Ayn Jarzee usually has enough water year-round.

Yes, this tour is family-friendly and children often love exploring the springs! The walking paths at Ayn Razat and Ayoon Springs are paved and accessible for strollers. However, please note: (1) At Ayn Jarzee (the swimming spot), there are some rocky areas that require careful footing. (2) At the Nabi Ayoub Tomb, children should be quiet and respectful inside the mosque. (3) The mountain roads have some winding sections — those prone to motion sickness should take medication. (4) The temperature on the mountain plateau can be 10-15°C cooler than the coast, so bring warm layers for children. Child seats are available on request.

Recommended packing list: Essential: Comfortable walking shoes with good grip (the paths can be slippery near water), sunscreen (even on cloudy mountain days UV can be high), hat or cap, camera, power bank. For swimming: Swimsuit, towel, change of clothes, waterproof phone case. Clothing: A light jacket or sweater is essential — the mountain plateau can be 10-15°C cooler than the coast. Even in summer, you might need a light layer. For the mosque: Women should bring a scarf to cover hair, and both men and women should wear modest clothing that covers knees and shoulders. Optional: Insect repellent (spring areas can have mosquitoes, especially during Khareef), binoculars for bird watching, a small backpack to keep hands free.

The springs offer different but wonderful experiences depending on the season: Khareef (June-September): This is when the mountains are at their most spectacular — everything is lush green, waterfalls cascade down the hillsides, the springs overflow creating streams and pools, and the air is cool and misty. This is peak season for a reason. Post-Khareef (October-November): The greenery begins to fade but water levels remain good. Fewer crowds, still pleasant temperatures. Winter (December-February): The springs still flow but with less volume. The landscape is more golden/brown but still beautiful. Cool, clear days perfect for photography. Spring (March-May): The driest time, but the springs still flow. Wildflowers may appear. Ahmed adjusts the itinerary based on current conditions to ensure you see the springs at their best regardless of season.

Not at all! Visitors of all faiths and no faith are welcome at the Nabi Ayoub Tomb. The site is valued for its historical and cultural significance as well as its religious importance. Many non-Muslim visitors describe feeling a deep sense of peace and connection at this site. The only requirements are: (1) Remove shoes before entering the mosque. (2) Dress modestly — knees and shoulders should be covered for both men and women. (3) Women should cover their hair with a scarf (one can usually be borrowed on site if you don't have one). (4) Be quiet and respectful inside. Ahmed will explain the significance of the site from cultural and historical perspectives that everyone can appreciate, regardless of personal beliefs. If you prefer not to enter the mosque, the grounds and views from the site are still worth the visit.
