Experience the true spirit of Oman with an unforgettable overnight adventure into the Empty Quarter — the world's largest sand desert.

The Desert Adventure is Ahmed's most requested tour — and for good reason. This 2-day journey takes you from the lush coast of Salalah into the vast, silent expanse of the Rub Al Khali (the Empty Quarter), the largest sand desert on Earth. Spanning parts of Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Yemen, this desert covers an area larger than France.
But this isn't just about the desert. The journey there takes you through two UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Wadi Dawkah, where the legendary Boswellia trees still grow, and Ubar, the fabled "Atlantis of the Sands," a city lost beneath the desert for over 1,500 years before being rediscovered by satellite in the 1990s.
Once in the desert, you'll experience dune driving, a spectacular sunset, traditional campfire dinner, and stargazing under one of the darkest skies on Earth — far from any light pollution, the stars of the Empty Quarter are simply breathtaking.

Your adventure begins around 11:00 AM when Ahmed picks you up from your hotel in a specially equipped 4x4 vehicle. The drive north takes you away from the green coastal region into increasingly arid terrain. The drive itself is about 4 hours, with a comfort stop along the way.
Your first major stop is Wadi Dawkah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects one of the most important frankincense tree reserves in the world. You'll walk among the ancient Boswellia sacra trees and learn about the frankincense trade that made Dhofar one of the wealthiest regions in the ancient world.
Stop in Thumrait for lunch at a local restaurant, offering traditional Omani dishes and international options.
For centuries, stories spoke of a wealthy desert city that disappeared beneath the sands, earning it the title "The Lost City of Arabia." Today, visitors can explore the excavated fortress and gain insight into the remarkable history of trade and survival in one of the world's most challenging desert environments.
This is where the real adventure begins. After Ubar, the 4x4 hits the sand. The Rub Al Khali is the world's largest sand sea, covering approximately 650,000 square kilometers. The dunes grow taller and more dramatic, some reaching heights of 150-200 meters.
Ahmed times the drive so you arrive at a spectacular dune location just as the sun begins its descent. The sand transforms into gold, amber, orange, deep red, and finally purple. Many guests describe this as one of the most beautiful sunsets they've ever seen.
As darkness falls, Ahmed sets up the wild camp between dunes. He prepares a traditional Omani dinner over the fire. After dinner, see the Milky Way, shooting stars, and even the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye.
Sunrise · Breakfast · Return to Salalah
The desert sunrise reveals the dunes in soft pink and golden light. After a hearty breakfast, pack up and drive back to Salalah, arriving in the early afternoon.
Arrive at your hotel in the early afternoon (3-3.5 hour drive) with incredible memories and amazing photos.
Yes, absolutely safe. Ahmed has been leading desert trips for over 10 years and knows the Empty Quarter intimately. The camping area is in a protected, flat location between dunes — away from steep edges or potential avalanche zones. Ahmed carries emergency supplies including extra water, a first-aid kit, a satellite phone for communication (there's no mobile signal in the deep desert), and GPS equipment. The desert is actually one of the safest environments in Oman — there are no dangerous wildlife, no other people, and no traffic.
As this is a true wilderness camping experience in the Empty Quarter, permanent restroom facilities are not available. The vast open desert offers complete privacy, and guests can comfortably use the natural surroundings at a suitable distance from the camp. We follow strict leave-no-trace principles to protect this unique environment, ensuring that all waste is handled responsibly. Your guide will provide a brief explanation upon arrival, making the experience comfortable and hassle-free.
Essential: Warm clothing is critical — the desert temperature drops dramatically at night, often to 10-15°C (50-59°F), even when daytime temperatures are 35°C+. Bring a warm jacket, fleece, or sweater, and long pants. Comfortable closed shoes are essential for walking on sand. Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses for daytime. Camera and power bank (no electricity in the desert). Personal medications. We provide: Tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, pillows, all meals, water, campfire and wood. Don't bring: Heavy luggage (space in the 4x4 is limited — bring a small overnight bag only).
This surprises many people, but the desert can get very cold at night. From October through March, nighttime temperatures regularly drop to 8-15°C (46-59°F), and it has been known to go as low as 5°C (41°F) on exceptional nights. From April through September, nights are warmer, around 18-25°C (64-77°F). The temperature drop is rapid — within an hour of sunset, it can fall 15-20 degrees. This is why warm clothing is absolutely essential, regardless of the season.
The dune driving is thrilling but not terrifying. Ahmed drives within safe limits. If you're prone to motion sickness, take medication about 30 minutes before the off-road driving begins. Sitting in the front seat (if available) and keeping your eyes on the horizon helps. You can also ask Ahmed to take a gentler route — he's happy to adjust his driving style. Most guests who were initially nervous end up loving the dune driving!
